Y’know.. of all the sanitized ‘cuss words’ we Christians might use, like ‘darn!’, ‘snap!’, ‘nuts!’, ‘stink!’ or ‘garwsh’, it’s a wonder we don’t take our epithets straight from our Manual; exegete our expletives, if you will.
I’m thinking a word like ‘Shibboleth’ would make for a robust ‘Christian Cuss Word’.
With the right pronunciation, it creates a nice, rich, multi-syllable tone, suitable for all manner of imprecation. And the ‘sh’ phoneme has a crusty quality about it that lets the speaker invest quite a bit of angst into the utterance. The uniqueness of this vocalization is bound to raise an eyebrow or two …and what better way for the Believer to compel his audience once again to open up the Word and discuss the power of the tongue.
I’m thinking we should do this.
(for those of you that have no clue what I’m talking about, read Judg 12:5-6)
